KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 21 – Up until yesterday, Umno has a total of 3,528,925 members through its 20,342 branches nationwide. Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, when presenting the party’s report at the 61st Umno general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here today, said Johor had the highest number of members with 493,495 people. He said the Kemaman Umno division in Terengganu recorded the highest number of members with 42,455 people, while the Felda Air Tawar 2 branch in Kota Tinggi, Johor, remains a branch with the highest number of members. Tengku Adnan said various methods were carried out to empower Umno and ensure it remains strong, which includes implementing training courses periodically for members from all levels. Since the last Umno assembly in October last year, 19 courses were held for Umno headquarters staff and 164 other courses involving divisions, information and training, he said. He said all Umno divisions and branches were asked to carry out membership selection from Jan 15 to Apr 15 to ensure the Umno membership entry method was transparent. “However, following complications in the process, the management committee has agreed to accept any objections or changes,” he added. Tengku Adnan said besides the 2,543 delegates, the assembly also involved 63 delegates representing 19 parties from 19 countries including Bangladesh, China, Singapore and Indonesia, as well as 54 delegates from 71 Overseas Umno Clubs. Also involved were 1,207 media representatives of which 56 were from the print and electronic media and 12 from the international media. The event held at the Dewan Merdeka started at 9.30am upon arrival of Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak accompanied by his deputy, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, with delegates seen arriving as early as 8am. |
