DPM: Govt will bear hospital, burial costs2011/05/22 Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (centre) at the site of the landslide last night. Muhyiddin, who conveyed his sympathies to the victims and their families, said Kasih, a Selangor-based non-governmental organisation, was expected to donate RM30,000. He said the orphanage had been operating at the site for 11 years and the management's intentions were noble in caring for the orphans. "It is unfortunate that something like this had to happen." Works Minister Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor said the Public Works Department (PWD) had been ordered to study the stability of slopes in the area. He said landslides had occurred in the area several times, but were not reported. "We want the PWD to check the area. If there are signs the slopes are not stable, we will inform the relevant authorities," he said after visiting the site last night. Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar were also at the scene. Shahrizat said family members of the victims had been given temporary accommodation at Azwin Resort nearby. Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) would bear the cost of all the needs of those who were rescued and members of the search-and-rescue operation. He said MBI would also contribute RM1,000 to each family of those killed in the landslide. |
