MALACCA: Barisan Nasional deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is to announce the candidate for the Merlimau by-election at 3.30pm today at the BN command centre opposite the Politeknik Merlimau. Pas will announce its candidate tomorrow. Prior to the announcement, Muhyiddin is scheduled to visit the family of Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasan, the Merlimau assemblymen who died on Jan 20. Among possible BN candidates are Jasin Umno committee members Roslan Ahmad, Mohd Nasser Selamat and Abdul Nasir Bazid, and Jasin Umno Wanita head Zaleha Bujang. Roslan is the son of former Sungai Rambai assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Ithnin and the business development and socio-economic manager for Perbadanan Melaka Holdings Sdn Bhd. Nasser is chief executive officer of the Malacca Customary Lands Development Corporation. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the candidate for the March 6 polls "must not only be winnable but also someone free of any issues".
