PAS won't impose Islamic state, assures DAP

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, in a bid to stem fears that its ally PAS will try to enforce an Islamic state if Pakatan Rakyat is voted into power, says the Islamic party is not seeking to impose hudud.

While acknowledging ideological differences between PAS and DAP, Lim said the differences do not prevent the two parties from cooperating on other issues.

"
This is PAS’ ideology, they do not impose it on us.

"It is not in Pakatan Rakyat’s manifesto... (so) it will not be implemented," Lim told a predominantly Malaysian Chinese crowd at the DAP's fundraising dinner in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, last night.

Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, added that he had previously stated the same before a variety of audiences, including the PAS muktamar and 20,000 PAS members.

"I said that DAP’s stance is that we do not agree with hudud. But while we do not agree on this, it does not mean DAP cannot cooperate with PAS; and PAS cannot cooperate with DAP.

"We can cooperate, together, to fight corruption, to fight injustice, to fight unfair treatment of Malaysians," Lim added.

BN, in particular MCA, has consistently attacked PAS’ ideology, saying that the party would implement hudud and an Islamic state if it comes to power.

The MCA has cited alleged sexual segregation at the New Year countdown in Sungai Petani, Kedah, and a ban on the sale of lottery tickets in Kelantan as examples in support of its claim.

Another speaker at the dinner, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar (right), slammed the housing loan scheme for the poor mooted by Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

In addition to the high interest rate as compared with other loans provided by the government, Nurul Izzah said, the monies would be handled by a ‘special purpose vehicle’ chaired by Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Raja Nong Chik Zainal Abidin.

“Who is going to manage the money lent to poor people? None other than Nong Chik’s private special purpose vehicle, where he is the reigning chairperson to manage money from the Employee’s Provident Fund,” she said.

Nurul Izzah entertained the crowd by mimicking Raja Nong Chik, saying: "Never mind-lah, you give me-lah, my special purpose vehicle. I give to the poor, and I get one percent in terms of service charge."

The dinner was a full-house event, attracting a lively crowd of more than 3,000 DAP supporters and raising RM132,103 in collections alone.

In addition, a variety of DAP paraphernalia, including books, comics and plush toys featuring its mascot Ubah in a variety of costumes, were put on sale - the latter all snapped up by the time the dinner ended at 11.20pm.

Speakers at the event included DAP publicity chief Tony Pua, Selangor DAP organising secretary Lau Weng San, Selangor PAS commissioner Dr Abdul Rani Osman and Annie Ooi Siew Lan, popularly known as 'Auntie Bersih'.

Harakah berani kafirkan pemimpin UMNO, mana berani nak kafirkan pemimpin sendiri.
